It's amazing how often highly capable children absorb reading. Somewhere, out of nowhere, they become readers. At times their reading strategies are not the most efficient and while they may be get the gist of what they read sometimes the details escape them (replacing "house" for "home", for example).

Reading fluency, in simple terms, is the speed, accuracy and expression (prosody) used when reading. Fluency is inextricably tied to decoding and reading comprehension. It is an essential skill sometimes overlooked in highly capable silent readers.

Each of the books in this series provides a clear direction on how to teach students to recognize words, read phrases with expression, and ultimately improve reading comprehension. The lessons in this book target the three major components of fluency: accuracy, rate of reading, and expression. The audio cd included has target phrases and stories being read aloud with model fluency.

On the road to becoming readers, students must not only learn to recognize words, but also recognize how combinations of words affect meaning. Although essential, word recognition and comprehension are not what make a reader fluent. To become fluent, students must also be able to read at a smooth pace and with appropriate expression. Can expression be taught? Yes! Students can be taught how to use structural and contextual evidence in writing as clues for how to read. Students can also be taught strategies for recognizing mood, purpose, emotion, and other interpretative skills that they can then use to enhance expression.

This series is written by two distinguished educators - Dr Timothy Rasinski and Dr Edward Fry. This series brings together Dr. Rasinski's research on phrasing as a way to increase reading fluency and Dr. Fry's research on the most common words found in materials that students read at school. The series presents Fry's Instant Words, by grade level, incorporated into phrases. The phrases are then embedded into interesting texts which are practiced to increase reading fluency, emphasizing the importance of reading with expression (prosody) which leads to increased comprehension.
