You are here:Home > Directory of Tests > SAGES-2

SAGES-2 is a test of both aptitude and achievement.  It comes in two different levels.  One level is used with children from Gr K-3 and a second level with children from Gr 4 - 8

Aptitude is measured via a reasoning subtest. The child is asked to solve analogical problems by identifying relationships among pictures and figures.  The questions asked are non-verbal involving pictures and figures (i.e. no words and no numbers)

Achievement is measured via two subtests. On one of these subtests, the child answers questions about language arts and social studies; on the other, he or she answers questions about mathematics and science. The child selects answers from a series of pictures, symbols, or words.

The subtests can be used to examine the relationships between aptitude and achievement. The test is untimed but each subtest usually takes about 20 minutes to administer. All of the SAGES-2 subtests can be administered in small groups or individually.

Math Analogies and Building Thinking Skills are the titles we recommend for the aptitiude component of the test.  You'll want just the figural reasoning component of Building Thinking Skills (the first half of the book).  You don't need the number based problems in Math Analogies.

For a young child the miniLUK Brain Olympics would be a good choice.  Every book contains a different type of exercises involving pairing up pictures. The controller and books are available separately so you don't need to purchase the entire set as shown here.

For the achievement component reading comprehension and deductive logic are the most important skills.  These can be developed using Reading Detective and Mind Benders.  You may also find Math Detective and Science Detective useful.  These cover grade level math and science using a multiple choice questioning format that is heavy on reasoning and understanding.

The grade level recommendations on all the books below are for the average child.  If you child is bright and reading above grade level we recommend purchasing a higher level of the series.  Your child will test better if they are prepared to answer the most difficult questions on the test.
