You are here:Home > Directory of Tests by Location > New York > New York City NNAT® and OLSAT® > When English is not your child's first language
The NNAT® (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test®) is a non-verbal ability test.  The instructions are clearly illustrated with pictures of a child completing test questions.  Once the child understands what they need to do the test proceeds without use of English.

The portions of the OLSAT® (Otis-Lennon School Ability Test®) which are given to your child are verbal.  Your child will have a test paper with pictures on it and the tester will read the questions from a script.  The test paper will be the same whichever language you choose for your child to be tested in.  The only difference will be the language the questions are read in.

NYC offers a choice of:
  • English
  • Arabic
  • Bengali
  • French
  • Cantonese
  • Mandarin
  • Haitian-Creole
  • Korean
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Urdu
We recommend using the same preparation material whichever language you choose for your child to be tested in.  We suggest that you translate the questions into the language your child will be tested in and also take the opportunity to introduce the English equivalents.  If your child is placed in a Gifted classroom they will need to get their English up to speed fast in order to succeed.

There are versions of the OLSAT® used in other countries with modified questions.  For some cultures some questions will be more difficult that they would be for an American, English speaking, child.  For example if you eat with chopsticks your child might not make the automatic connection between knives and forks and food that an American, English speaking child would.

The titles below provide ample opportunity to introduce common connections which it would help your child to be familiar with.  While these books are printed in English you can translate for your child.  It's the connections and concepts that are important, not the English words.

We have other resources too and we recommend that your browse the section corresponding to your child's age as well.  The resources listed below are those likely to have additional benefit to children who will be tested in a language other than English.
